Becoming a foster parent is a significant decision, so the assessment is thorough. It gives us the chance to understand you and your household, and it gives you the chance to understand Flourish, ask questions and decide whether fostering is right for you. You will be supported throughout rather than left to navigate the process alone.
1. Your first conversation
A member of our recruitment team will ask about your circumstances and what has led you to consider fostering. You can ask anything, and there is no pressure to proceed.
2. An initial home visit
A Flourish social worker will meet you at home, get to know you and discuss your household, spare bedroom, support network and expectations. This is a two-way conversation, not a test.
3. Your application
If fostering with Flourish looks like a good next step, we will invite you to complete an application. We will explain the information and consent we need before checks and references begin.
4. Checks and references
Fostering services must complete a range of checks and speak to people who know you. Your assessor will explain what applies to your household and answer questions about the process.
5. Preparation and training
You will attend introductory fostering training and begin learning about Flourish’s therapeutic approach. Training also gives you the opportunity to meet others who are preparing to foster.
6. Your Form F assessment
You will work with a dedicated social work assessor to explore your background, family life, relationships, experiences and motivation. Together, you will build a detailed picture of the strengths you could bring to fostering and any areas that need further preparation.
7. Fostering panel
Your completed assessment is considered by an independent panel. You will be invited to attend, meet panel members and answer questions. The focus is on honesty, reflection and your ability to learn.
8. Approval and preparation for a first placement
Following a positive recommendation and formal approval, you become an approved foster parent. Your regional and placements teams will then work with you carefully when considering possible matches.
You will meet more than one part of Flourish
The assessment process is also your introduction to the people behind the service. You may speak with recruitment colleagues, social workers, trainers, regional managers, administrators and therapists. Each person has a different role, but they should give you a consistent experience of Flourish.
Honesty matters more than perfection
Everyone has difficult experiences, gaps in knowledge and parts of their life they would rather not discuss. A strong assessment is not about presenting a perfect version of yourself. It is about being open, reflective and willing to understand how your experiences may affect fostering.
