People foster because they want to make a difference to children. That does not mean the financial side should be vague. Foster parents take on substantial responsibility, make changes to family life and develop specialist skills. Payments should recognise both the costs of caring for a child and the professional role the foster parent performs.
How fostering payments work
Foster parents usually receive two main elements of payment:
- A maintenance payment towards the everyday costs of caring for the child or young person.
- A professional fee for the work you do as a foster parent.
The total amount depends on factors including the type of fostering, the child’s age and needs, and your experience and training. We will explain the payment structure clearly before you make any commitment.
Additional allowances
Depending on the placement and current Flourish policy, additional allowances may support costs such as clothing, school uniform, celebrations and summer activities. Your team will explain what applies and how payments are arranged.
21 days of paid respite
Rest is part of sustaining good care. Flourish provides 21 days of paid respite each year so foster parents can take planned time to recharge while children continue to receive safe, thoughtful support.
Respite arrangements must always be planned around the individual child, their relationships and what helps them feel secure.
Training can support progression
As your skills and experience develop, you may be able to take on different fostering roles and progress through Flourish training and qualification pathways. We will help you understand the opportunities available through specialist courses and recognised qualifications.
